In a groundbreaking collaboration, renowned designer Jony Ive and OpenAI’s Sam Altman are partnering on an innovative artificial intelligence hardware project. Tang Tan, a former Apple executive, will join Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom, to shape the aesthetics and capabilities of these cutting-edge devices.

Altman, a prominent figure in the field of modern AI, is set to provide the crucial software foundation for the project. The initiative, though still in its early stages, aims to establish a new company dedicated to AI devices, reflecting Ive’s vision since departing from Apple in 2019.

The focus thus far has been on talent acquisition and conceptualization, with Tan leading hardware engineering at LoveFrom. The departure of design talent from Apple, including Tan, underscores a shift in the industry landscape. Notably, Tan’s exit follows a series of departures from Ive’s former team at Apple, emphasizing a changing dynamic within the company.

While specific details about the AI hardware project remain undisclosed, it is known that concepts in development include devices for the home. The collaboration has already garnered attention, with Altman reportedly exploring significant investments, including discussions with SoftBank Group Corp. Chairman Masayoshi Son.

LoveFrom, Ive’s design firm, boasts an impressive clientele, including companies like Airbnb, Ferrari, and Moncler. The departure of several key Apple designers to LoveFrom signals a broader trend in the industry, with over 20 former Apple employees now part of the design firm.

As the project gains momentum, questions remain about its potential impact on the tech landscape. With the combined expertise of Ive, Altman, and Tan, this AI hardware venture promises to be a pivotal development in the convergence of design and artificial intelligence.
